Chinese cupping involves placing glass jars on the skin and creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying tissue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup. The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins that linger in your bodies tissues. Cupping is one of the best deep tissue therapies available. It is thought to affect up to four inches deep from the external skin.
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped with a tool to produce light bruising. Gua Sha releases unhealthy elements from injured areas and stimulates blood flow and healing. It has been used to treat everything from fevers to digestive problems to back pain. During the treatment you will experience a warming sensation. The red marks known as “sha” will appear and last for a couple of days or longer. Often you will only need one Gua Sha treatment to relieve back pain.
